Uzbekistan 3-Day Express Tour: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara

The Uzbekistan 3-Day Express Tour connects the country's three most visited cities — Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara — in three days, using the Afrosiyob high-speed train for every long stretch. It is a fast route for first-time visitors and business travellers with little time: one day for the capital, one for Samarkand with an evening ride to Bukhara, and one for Bukhara before the train back to Tashkent. Day 1: Tashkent

Morning: arrival and transfer to your hotel. Tashkent's airport is close to the centre, so the drive is short.

Late morning to afternoon: a city tour that shows both faces of the capital. In the old town you visit the Khast Imam complex and Chorsu Bazaar under its blue dome; in the modern centre, Amir Timur Square, Independence Square and a few of the decorated metro stations.

Evening: dinner and an early night. Tomorrow's train leaves in the morning, and you will only sleep in Bukhara the next night, so pack a small bag for the day.

Day 2: Samarkand, then the evening train to Bukhara

Early morning: transfer to Tashkent's railway station and departure on the Afrosiyob high-speed train. After a little over two hours you arrive in Samarkand, where your guide and driver meet you at the station.

Late morning: Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of Amir Timur, then Registan Square with the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kori madrasahs.

Midday: lunch in the centre, then Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siab Bazaar next to it — a good place to buy Samarkand bread, dried fruit and nuts.

Afternoon: the blue-tiled mausoleums of the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis and Ulugh Beg's Observatory, the 15th-century astronomer's workplace on the edge of the city.

Evening: the high-speed train to Bukhara takes under two hours. You are met at Bukhara station and taken to a boutique hotel for the night.

Day 3: Bukhara and the train back to Tashkent

Morning: after breakfast at the hotel, a walking tour through Bukhara's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble around its old pool, Magoki-Attori Mosque, the covered trading domes, the Poi-Kalyan complex with the Kalyan Minaret and Mosque, and the walls of the Ark Fortress, seen from outside.

Early afternoon: lunch and a little free time in the trading domes for souvenirs.

Afternoon: the high-speed train back to Tashkent, about four hours. You arrive in the evening and are taken to your hotel.

Is the express route right for you?

The express route works because the Afrosiyob line connects all three cities: you never spend a whole day on the road, and the long stretch back from Bukhara is covered by train while you rest. The price is pace. Day 2 starts early and ends late, and you see Samarkand and Bukhara once each, without a slow evening in either old town.

Practical tips

• Book the trains as soon as your dates are fixed; seats on spring and autumn dates sell out early.
• Keep your passport in your hand luggage: it is needed for the train tickets and may be checked at the station.
• Arrive at the station 30–40 minutes before departure for the security and ticket checks.
• Travel light — on day 2 you carry your luggage from Tashkent to Bukhara via Samarkand.
• Do not book an international flight for the evening of day 3; the train arrives in Tashkent in the evening.
• Wear comfortable shoes and dress modestly for the mosques and mausoleums.
