Where is Agalyk?

Agalyk (also spelled Aghalyk or Okhalik) is the name of a village, a small river valley and a range of low mountains close to Samarkand. Uzbekistan's official tourism portal places the Agalyk Mountains about 15 km from the city, together with the village of the same name and the Agalyksay river. The range is a spur of the Zarafshan Range, the long mountain chain that runs through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

For a visitor the change is quick and complete. After a short drive you leave the blue domes and busy streets of Samarkand behind and arrive among open green hills, fields and village houses. The air is fresher and the views are wide.

What the ride is like

In Agalyk you meet the local horsemen who keep the horses. The ride itself takes 1–1.5 hours and follows trails through the hills and valleys around the village. The pace is calm, with time to look around, take photos and enjoy the views over the countryside. It is a relaxed countryside ride, not a sport lesson or a race.

After the ride there is free time for photos, a rest and a walk in the village before your driver takes you back to Samarkand. It is a simple, quiet morning in nature and a look at village life a short drive from one of the busiest cities on the Silk Road.

Can you ride longer?

Yes. If you enjoy it and want more time in the saddle, extra riding beyond 1.5 hours is possible. It is arranged on the day and paid on the spot.

Horse riding for beginners: the instructor

You do not need any riding experience for this trip. The pace suits beginners, and if you are less confident you can ask for an instructor to ride with you. The instructor is included in the price; just tell us when you book that you have little or no experience, so that an instructor is arranged for you.

Experienced riders can ride on their own. If you are unsure which suits you, tell us how much you have ridden before when you book.

Minimum age and who the ride suits

Riders must be at least 12 years old. The ride suits couples, friends and families with teenagers who want a break from monuments and museums, and travellers who have already seen the main sights of Samarkand and want an easy half day in nature. Because it is a private tour, you ride only with your own group.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable trousers: long trousers are best for riding.
  • Closed shoes: trainers or light boots, not sandals or flip-flops.
  • Hat and sunglasses: the sun in the hills can be strong.
  • A light jacket: mornings in the foothills can be cooler than in the city.
  • Some cash: if you plan to ride longer, which is paid on the spot, or want to leave tips for the driver and horsemen.

Bottled drinking water is included. Meals and snacks are not, so have a good breakfast before you set off; you are back in Samarkand in the early afternoon.

Best time to go: season and time of day

The Agalyk ride runs every day, all year round, and each season feels different. Spring is the greenest time in the hills, and Uzbekistan's official tourism portal mentions blooming poppy fields in the Agalyk Mountains. Samarkand has hot, dry summers, with July and August the hottest months, when temperatures can reach 40°C or more — so in summer the morning start is a real advantage, and a hat and sunglasses are essential. In the cooler months, dress in layers.

The tour always starts in the morning, with pick-up between 09:00 and 10:00; the exact time is agreed with you in advance. For the climate month by month across the country, see our guide on the best time to visit Uzbekistan.

Combining the ride with a Samarkand city day

Agalyk works best as a change of pace inside a Samarkand stay of two or more days. Our private Samarkand city tour takes 6–7 hours and also starts in the morning, so the two do not fit comfortably into the same day. A good plan is to spend the first day with a guide at Gur-Emir, Registan Square, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Siab Bazaar, Shah-i-Zinda and the Ulugh Beg Observatory, and to ride in Agalyk the next morning. You are back at your hotel in the early afternoon, with the rest of the day free to return to your favourite square or bazaar on your own.

To plan the city day, read our complete guide to the Samarkand city tour. For more half-day and full-day ideas, see our list of day tours from Samarkand.

When to choose a longer ride in the Nuratau Mountains

The Agalyk ride is a short, easy outing from your Samarkand hotel. If riding is one of the main reasons for your trip, or you want to sleep in a mountain village, the Nuratau Mountains between Bukhara and Samarkand may suit you better.

In short: choose Agalyk if you are based in Samarkand and want a calm ride of an hour or so, back by early afternoon. Choose Nuratau if you are travelling between Bukhara and Samarkand anyway and want a longer ride, mountain villages and a night with a local family.
