The Nuratau Mountains rise between the Kyzylkum Desert and the farmland of central Uzbekistan, and their side valleys hide small villages, walnut and fruit orchards and one of the country's rarest animals. A three-day Nuratau homestay gives you enough time to walk there properly: two nights with families and a full day on the trail from Asraf to Ukhum. This guide covers the hike, the wildlife, the rock art and the seasons.

The Nuratau Mountains in brief

The Nuratau range runs for more than 170 km from east to west; its highest peak, Zargar, reaches about 2,169 m. To the north lie Lake Aydarkul and the Kyzylkum, to the south the plains towards Samarkand and Bukhara. The villages sit in green side valleys where springs make farming possible: apricots, walnuts, wheat and small gardens behind stone walls.

The hike from Asraf to Ukhum

The second day is the heart of the trip. A local guide born in these mountains leads the walk, which the tour data splits into four parts:

Valley floor

An easy first hour along the river valley and through apricot orchards outside Asraf.

Climb to Karul

The path then climbs for about an hour and a half through juniper-covered slopes to Karul, at about 1,650 m. On a clear day you see the higher Nuratau ridges on one side and the Kyzylkum Desert and Lake Aydarkul on the other. This is where most groups stop for a picnic lunch.

Ridge and the Deh fortress

A short walk along the ridge passes the stone walls of an old fortress known as Deh.

Down to Ukhum

The last section winds down through terraced hillsides to Ukhum, where your second host family is waiting.

The walking is not technical, but there are steady climbs and loose stones on the descent. If you can walk four to five hours with breaks, you can do it.

Wildlife: Severtsov's argali

The Nuratau Mountains are home to Severtsov's argali, a wild sheep subspecies found only in Uzbekistan. It is listed as vulnerable and protected in the Nurata State Nature Reserve, created in 1975, which also protects relic walnut groves. On the first afternoon the tour visits a protected habitat where you can learn about the animals; seeing them in the wild on the trail is a matter of luck, so bring binoculars. Birds of prey are common over the ridges, and in spring the slopes are full of wildflowers.

Rock carvings in the valleys

Several Nuratau valleys have petroglyphs — figures pecked into the rock. Near Sentob, for example, Bronze Age carvings show oxen, deer, wild rams and hunters with bows, alongside later horsemen and Arabic inscriptions, and above Uhum there is a petroglyph site on the edge of the nature reserve. They are not a fixed stop on this itinerary; if you are interested, tell us when booking and we will see what fits. Please do not touch or chalk the carvings.

When to go

The tour runs from March to November. Spring brings green slopes and flowers; summer days are hot on the open ridges, so the walk starts in the morning; autumn brings harvest time in the orchards and clearer air for views. Whatever the month, mornings and evenings in the mountains are cooler than in Samarkand or Bukhara.

Practical tips

  • Wear walking shoes with good grip; trekking poles help on the descent.
  • Carry at least 1.5 litres of water, sun protection and a hat for the open ridge.
  • Bring binoculars for wildlife and a zoom lens if you photograph birds.
  • Pack a warm layer and a light rain jacket.
  • Leave your main luggage in the car; you only need a daypack on the trail.
  • Day 3 includes Nurata's fortress ruins, the Chashma spring and a suzani workshop — bring some cash if you want to buy embroidery.
