Stop 1The tour: a typical route
1. The Ark — the fortress and residence of the rulers of Bukhara for centuries, with its courtyards, throne room and museums. 2. Bolo-Hauz mosque — the Friday mosque of the emirs, opposite the Ark, with a terrace of tall carved wooden columns reflected in its pool. 3. Kalyan minaret and Poi-Kalyan — the minaret of 1127, about 46 metres tall, with the Kalyan mosque and the Mir-i-Arab madrasah facing each other across the square. 4. The domed bazaars and Magoki-Attori — 16th-century covered markets, still full of craftsmen and traders, and one of the oldest mosques in the city. 5. Lyabi-Hauz — a 17th-century pool shaded by old trees and framed by the Kukeldash madrasah and the Nodir Divan-begi madrasah and khanaqah. 6. Bukhara synagogue — a house of prayer of Bukhara's centuries-old Jewish community. 7. Chor-Minor — the gatehouse of a former madrasah, built in the early 19th century, with four towers crowned by turquoise domes. A lunch break at a local restaurant fits in along the way.
