Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Amir Timur, lies south of Samarkand on the far side of the mountains. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the road there is part of the day: past vineyards and villages and over the Takhtakaracha Pass, with panoramic views from the top.
We pick you up at your hotel in Samarkand. In Shakhrisabz a local English- or Russian-speaking guide walks with you through the old centre: the giant portal of Timur's Ak-Saray Palace, the Dorut Tilovat complex with the blue-domed Kok Gumbaz Mosque, and Dorus Saodat, the burial complex Timur planned for his family. The local museum is an optional stop.
The tour takes about 6–7 hours. A lunch stop can be arranged and may make the day a little longer. You can book a private tour with a guide, join a group tour, or take a car with a driver only. A private tour follows your interests and your pace.
Round-trip transport, the guide in Shakhrisabz and bottled water are included. Entrance tickets (about $12–15 per person) and lunch (about $15 per person) are paid on the spot, or you can add both with the All-inclusive option when you book a private tour.
