A family reunion, a choir on tour, a company trip or a group of friends: once you are more than seven, one car is no longer enough, and the question becomes which vehicle — or how many. This guide is for group organisers planning their own route through Uzbekistan. It explains the vehicle sizes we work with, how to count seats and luggage, and what changes when the same vehicle and driver stay with you from the first day to the last.

Key facts

  • Group sizes: from 8 travellers in a minibus to 45 in a full-size coach; larger groups travel in several vehicles.
  • Vehicles: Lux minivan (7 seats), standard minibus (16), midibus (29) and coach (45); the midibus and the coach are arranged on request.
  • Luggage: each vehicle takes as many standard suitcases as it has seats.
  • Whole trip: the same vehicle and driver stay with your group for several days when you book them for those days.
  • Service: private, only for your group, door to door; 24/7 for early flights and late arrivals.
  • Routes: Tashkent ⇄ Samarkand 4–5 hours, Samarkand ⇄ Bukhara 4–5 hours, Bukhara ⇄ Khiva 6–7 hours, plus airports and day trips.
  • Price: per vehicle, not per person — ask us for your group and dates.

Which vehicle for how many travellers

Seat numbers count travellers only; the driver has his own seat. We never offer a vehicle with fewer seats than your group.

  • Lux minivan (Hyundai Staria or Starex): up to 7 travellers and 7 suitcases — for a group of exactly seven, or as a second vehicle.
  • Standard minibus: up to 16 travellers and 16 suitcases — the usual choice for 8 to 16 people.
  • Midibus (Isuzu): up to 29 travellers and 29 suitcases, on request.
  • Coach (Yutong, Higer or Golden Dragon): up to 45 travellers and 45 suitcases, on request.

Midibuses and coaches are not kept waiting for one route: we find the size your group needs for your dates. Send us the number of travellers as early as you can, especially for the high season.

One large vehicle or several smaller ones

For most groups one vehicle is simpler: everyone arrives together, the guide speaks to the whole group at once and there is one driver to coordinate. Two smaller vehicles can make sense when the group splits during the trip — part of it flies home early, or some travellers take the train for one leg — or when you want more flexibility on a day of optional visits.

A rule of thumb: plan the vehicle for the full group plus a little room. Twenty-eight people in a 29-seat midibus fits, but on a six-hour desert day a little spare space is welcome.

Luggage: count suitcases as well as people

Each vehicle takes as many standard suitcases as it has seats. Groups often travel with more: extra bags, musical instruments, sports equipment, boxes of souvenirs bought along the way. Tell us about anything unusual when you ask for a quote. If the luggage does not fit, the answer is a larger vehicle, not a full aisle.

Keep one small bag per person in the cabin — water, a jacket, medicines, a charger and the passport — so that the big suitcases can stay in the luggage compartment all day.

The same vehicle and driver for the whole route

On a multi-day trip you can keep one vehicle and one driver from start to finish: when you book them for those days, they stay with your group. The driver learns the group's rhythm, the luggage stays loaded between hotels, and there is one person to call for every pickup. The classic route links Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva; our stated driving times are about 4–5 hours for Tashkent to Samarkand, 4–5 hours for Samarkand to Bukhara and 6–7 hours for Bukhara to Khiva.

You can also mix: a vehicle for the legs with stops, the train for a fast leg, and a transfer from the station to the hotel at the other end. Our guide to the Tashkent to Samarkand drive compares the two options on the busiest leg.

Airports, early flights and old towns

Group days often start very early or end very late. Our service runs 24/7, so a coach can meet a night flight or take the group to a dawn departure. If an arriving flight is delayed, the driver waits up to 60 minutes free of charge; a longer wait is charged extra, by agreement.

Hotels inside the old towns can be on narrow lanes. A large vehicle may have to stop on the nearest wider street, and the last few hundred metres are on foot — tell us the hotel names, and we plan the drop-off point in advance.

Drivers, guides and language

The driver's job is the road and the vehicle; a guide is a separate person. Most of our drivers speak little English but communicate easily with a translation app on the phone. An English-speaking driver can be arranged and may cost more than usual. For a group, a guide who travels with you usually does more for the trip than a driver who speaks English — we can arrange both.

Practical tips

  • Ask early: send the number of travellers, dates and route as soon as they are known; midibuses and coaches are arranged on request.
  • Send one list: names of hotels, flight and train details for the whole group in one message.
  • Count the bags: mention instruments, sports equipment or extra suitcases.
  • Name a group leader: one contact for the driver makes every pickup faster.
  • Plan breaks: on long legs, a stop every couple of hours keeps a large group comfortable.
  • Children in the group? Child seats are available on request where possible, free of charge.

Plan it with TravelBliss

We arrange group transport across Uzbekistan — airport transfers, intercity legs and day trips — and, if you wish, guides, hotels and train tickets for the same route. See the vehicles and routes on our private transfers page, or send your group's plan through Plan your trip. For individual travellers who would rather join a group than organise one, our Classic Silk Road small-group tour is the easier option. Prices are per vehicle and depend on its size, the route and the dates.
