Tashkent to Samarkand by Car: Private Transfer When the Train Is Sold Out

Tashkent and Samarkand are about 324 km apart. When the Afrosiyob train is sold out, or you simply want to go from hotel to hotel, a private car with a driver takes you there in 4–5 hours — and the same transfer runs from Samarkand back to Tashkent.

Tashkent to Samarkand is the journey almost every visitor to Uzbekistan makes, in one direction or the other: you land in the capital and head for the Registan, or you finish in Samarkand and travel back to Tashkent for your flight home. It is also the transfer our guests ask us for most often. This guide is for the moment the fast train does not work out — no seats on your date, an arrival that does not fit the timetable, or simply too much luggage for two stations and two taxis — and explains how the drive works in both directions.

Key facts

  • Distance: about 324 km by road between Tashkent and Samarkand.
  • By car: 4–5 hours with our driver, door to door, depending on traffic and stops.
  • By train: the Afrosiyob takes about 2 to 2.5 hours from station to station (as of October 2026), when you have a ticket.
  • Both directions: Tashkent → Samarkand and Samarkand → Tashkent work the same way.
  • Pickup: your hotel, a railway station or Tashkent International Airport — at any hour, 24/7.
  • Cars: sedans for up to 3 travellers, minivans for 6 or 7, a minibus for up to 16; a midibus (29) or a coach (45) on request.
  • Price: per car, not per person — see the Tashkent–Samarkand private transfer page or ask us.

No train ticket? A private car instead

The Afrosiyob is a good train: fast, comfortable and punctual. The difficulty is getting a seat. On the Tashkent–Samarkand line the high-speed trains are often sold out, above all in the high season. If your dates are fixed and the train has no seats, the trip does not have to wait: a private car leaves when you are ready, and nobody needs to find a ticket.

A car is not only a plan B. Travellers also choose it when a flight lands at an hour that does not match any departure, when they travel with children or older relatives, or when there are more suitcases than hands.

Door to door: what the train time does not show

On paper the train wins clearly — about two hours against four or five. But the train time runs only from platform to platform. A train day in practice looks like this:

  • Before: a ride from your hotel to the station, arriving early enough for the ticket and security check at the entrance, then waiting on the platform.
  • The ride: about 2 to 2.5 hours, with your luggage on the rack.
  • After: finding a taxi at Samarkand station, which is more than 6 km from the Registan, and explaining the way to your hotel or guesthouse.

Tashkent also has two large stations, the main station and Tashkent South, about 7 km apart, so check which one is on your ticket.

With a private car the day starts when the driver loads your bags at the hotel door and ends when he unloads them at the next one. There is no queue, no platform and no taxi at the other end, and you choose the departure time. The car still takes longer, but the gap is much smaller than the timetable suggests.

The drive from Tashkent to Samarkand

The road runs south-west out of the capital through the Syrdarya and Jizzakh regions, mostly through open farmland, before it reaches the green Zeravshan valley and Samarkand. It is a long but easy drive; our stated time is 4–5 hours, and traffic leaving Tashkent and the stops you ask for make the day shorter or longer.

The car is yours for the journey. A tea break, lunch at a roadside café or a photo stop are possible on request — just tell the driver. On a long leg, a short pause every couple of hours makes the day easier, especially with children.

From Samarkand back to Tashkent

The return transfer works exactly the same way, and many travellers book it for the last day of the trip. The driver collects you at your hotel in Samarkand and drives you to your hotel in Tashkent, to a railway station or straight to Tashkent International Airport. For a flight home, tell us the departure time and we agree the pickup time with you so that you arrive with enough time for check-in and passport control — and you do not depend on an evening train that may be full.

Starting at the airport

If you land in Tashkent and want to go straight on to Samarkand, the driver meets you at the airport and you skip a night in the capital. Send us the flight number and the arrival time. Our transfers run 24/7, and if your flight is delayed the driver waits up to 60 minutes free of charge; a longer delay is charged extra, by agreement with you. More about arrivals is in our guide to airport transfers in Uzbekistan.

Which car for your group and luggage

The car is chosen by the number of travellers and suitcases (the seats do not count the driver), and we never offer a car with fewer seats than your group:

  • Standard sedan (Chevrolet Cobalt or Gentra): 3 travellers, 3 suitcases.
  • Premium sedan (Chevrolet Malibu): 3 travellers, 3 suitcases.
  • VIP minivan (Kia Carnival): 6 travellers, 6 suitcases.
  • Lux minivan (Hyundai Staria or Starex): 7 travellers, 7 suitcases.
  • Standard minibus: 16 travellers, 16 suitcases.
  • Midibus or coach: 29 or 45 seats, on request for larger groups.

Standard luggage is included. Travelling with small children? Child seats are available on request where possible, free of charge — tell us the children's ages when you book. Most of our drivers speak little English but communicate easily with a translation app on the phone; an English-speaking driver can be arranged and may cost more.

Car or train: how to choose

Take the train if:

  • you have tickets and travel light;
  • you want the most hours in Samarkand on the day you travel;
  • you are visiting Samarkand for one day from Tashkent — our Samarkand day tour from Tashkent is built around the fast train.

Take a private car if:

  • the train is sold out on your date, or its times do not fit your flight;
  • you are three or more travellers, or travel with children or older relatives;
  • you have large or many suitcases;
  • you want to leave from your hotel door, at your own time, with stops on the way.

Practical tips

  • Book the car once your dates are fixed: you need no ticket, only a date, a pickup address and the number of travellers and suitcases.
  • Send full addresses: the hotel name and street at both ends, or your flight or train details.
  • Count the bags, not only the people: when in doubt, choose the next larger car.
  • Carry water and a snack: the drive is several hours long, and summer days are hot.
  • Keep your passport with you, not in a suitcase in the boot.
