Getting around

Samarkand to Bukhara: By Car or by Train?

Samarkand and Bukhara are about 277 km apart. The Afrosiyob train covers it in about 1.5 to 2 hours from station to station; a private car takes 4 to 5 hours, but from door to door and with stops on the way. Here is how to choose for your group, your luggage and your day.

Almost every trip to Uzbekistan includes the leg from Samarkand to Bukhara, or from Bukhara to Samarkand. There are two good ways to make it: the high-speed train or a private car with a driver. The train is faster between the stations; the car is slower but starts at your hotel door and can stop on the way. This guide compares the two on the questions that decide it in practice.

Key facts

  • Distance: about 277 km by road.
  • By train: the Afrosiyob takes about 1.5 to 2 hours between the stations; the slower Sharq about 2.5 to 3 hours (as of October 2026).
  • By car: about 4 to 5 hours with our driver, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops.
  • Stations: Samarkand station is more than 6 km from the Registan; Bukhara station is about 12 km from the old town.
  • Private car: door to door, in both directions, only for your group; the price is per car, not per person.
  • Cars: sedans for up to 3 travellers, minivans for 6 or 7, a minibus for up to 16.
  • Book with: our Samarkand ⇄ Bukhara transfer page (linked at the end) or contact us for current prices.

Door to door or station to station

On paper the train wins clearly: under two hours against four or five. But the train time only counts from platform to platform. Both stations are outside the historic centres, so you need a ride to the station, time for the ticket and security check at the entrance, and another ride from the station to your hotel in the old town. In Bukhara that last ride is about 12 km.

With a car, the clock starts when the driver loads your bags at your hotel or guesthouse and stops when he unloads them at the next one. You leave when it suits you, and nothing depends on a seat being available. The car still takes longer, but the difference is smaller than the timetable suggests.

For timetables, train classes and how to buy tickets, see our Afrosiyob high-speed train guide and the Afrosiyob tickets and booking guide. This post covers only the choice between the two.

Luggage and group size

For one or two people with small bags, the train is easy: the Afrosiyob has luggage racks, and travellers report that they take full-size suitcases. It becomes harder with several large cases, a pushchair or older travellers, because every bag has to go through the station entrance, onto the train and off again, twice in one day.

In a private car standard luggage is included, and each car on our transfer page shows how many seats and suitcases it has. A sedan (Chevrolet Cobalt or Gentra, or a premium sedan) seats 3 travellers with 3 suitcases; the Lux minivan (Hyundai Staria or Starex) 7 with 7; the VIP minivan 6 with 6; the minibus 16 with 16. We never offer a car with fewer seats than your group. For more than 16 travellers, ask us.

Group size also changes the arithmetic. Train tickets are sold per seat, while a car is priced per car, whoever sits in it. A family of four or a group of friends shares one vehicle; a solo traveller does not.

What you can see on the road

From the train you see fields and villages through a window; on the road you can get out. On a private transfer, short stops for photos, rest or food are possible on request.

Rabat-i-Malik on the main road

The main road between Samarkand and Bukhara, the M37, passes the portal of Rabat-i-Malik, a Silk Road caravanserai of the Karakhanid period in the Navoi region. It stands beside the highway, which makes it the natural short stop on the way. Our 2-day tours between the two cities stop there and at a pottery workshop in Gijduvan, a ceramics town on the Bukhara side of the route.

Longer detours: Nuratau and the desert

North of the main road lie the Nuratau Mountains and the Kyzylkum Desert. Turning the transfer into a two-day trip lets you sleep in either. The Nuratau Villages Homestay Experience spends a night with a family in a mountain village, then drives on via the Chashma complex in Nurata, Rabat-i-Malik and Gijduvan. The 2-day Yurt Camp and Aydarkul Lake tour visits Nurata, has lunch by Lake Aydarkul and spends the night in a desert yurt camp. Both run from March to November and in either direction. Why a night in the mountains may be worth an extra day is the subject of What If Your Samarkand-Bukhara Journey Took You to Nuratau?

The mountain road via Shakhrisabz

A third way is a one-day tour that leaves Samarkand at 8 in the morning, crosses the mountains to Shakhrisabz and the shrine of Langar-Ota, and reaches Bukhara in the evening. It is a long sightseeing day rather than a transfer, with guides at each place.

Timing your day

By car, a morning start puts you in the other city in the early afternoon, with time to check in and walk out for the evening. On a 2-day detour tour you still arrive on the afternoon of the second day.

By train, the timetable sets the day. The Afrosiyob runs several times a day on this line, but not every train runs daily, and popular departures sell out early. If your tickets are fixed weeks ahead, the train is reliable; if your plans may change, the car is easier to move.

A day trip is different. From Samarkand to Bukhara and back by car means two drives of 4 to 5 hours, which leaves little time in Bukhara. For a day trip, the train is the realistic choice; how such a day works is described in Discover Bukhara & Samarkand in 2 Days.

Which one should you choose?

Take the train if:

  • you travel alone or as a couple with light luggage;
  • you want the most time in the cities and do not mind the station transfers;
  • you are visiting Bukhara for the day from Samarkand.

Take a private car if:

  • you are three or more, or travel with children or older relatives;
  • you have large or many suitcases;
  • you want to leave from your hotel at your own time, or the train is sold out;
  • you want to stop at Rabat-i-Malik or turn the transfer into a night in the mountains or the desert.

Practical tips

  • Send the exact addresses: give us the name and address of both hotels, or your train or flight, so the driver goes straight to the door.
  • Count the bags, not only the people: choose the car by seats and suitcases.
  • Plan stops in advance: tell us which stops you want, so we can plan the timing.
  • Keep water and snacks: the drive is several hours long, and the summer heat is strong.
  • Book the train first: if you choose the train for one leg and the car for another, fix the train dates first.

Plan it with TravelBliss

We arrange the private car and driver between Samarkand and Bukhara in both directions, door to door, and the 2-day tours through the Nuratau Mountains or the desert. You can also mix: the train for one leg, a car for another. See the Samarkand ⇄ Bukhara transfer page or all our private transfers in Uzbekistan. Prices depend on the car and the season and are per car — where no price is shown, we confirm it by WhatsApp or e-mail.

Questions and answers

About 4 to 5 hours with our driver for the road distance of about 277 km, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops.

Is the train faster than a car from Samarkand to Bukhara?

Yes, between the stations: the Afrosiyob takes about 1.5 to 2 hours (as of October 2026). From hotel to hotel the gap is smaller, because both stations are outside the old towns.

Can we stop on the way from Samarkand to Bukhara?

Yes. On a private transfer, short stops for photos, rest or food are possible on request. Longer visits, such as a night in a Nuratau village, are part of our 2-day tours.

Which car do we need for four people?

A minivan: our sedans seat 3 travellers with 3 suitcases. The Lux minivan seats 7 with 7 suitcases and the VIP minivan 6 with 6.

Is Bukhara a day trip from Samarkand?

It is possible, but by car you spend 8 to 10 hours on the road. For a day trip the high-speed train is the better choice.

Does the transfer also run from Bukhara to Samarkand?

Yes. Every route runs in both directions, and the price is per car, not per person.
