Private Driver in Uzbekistan: How to Hire a Car with Driver (2026–2027)

A private driver in Uzbekistan gives your group its own car, door to door, between Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva or out to the mountains. Which car fits how many people, how long each road takes, and when the train is the better half of the plan.

Hiring a private driver in Uzbekistan means one car and one professional driver for your group only, from the door of one hotel to the door of the next. It is the simplest way to link Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva on your own timetable, and the easiest way to reach mountain villages or the Tajik border.

Key facts

  • What you get: a private car with a professional driver, for your group only — you never share it with other travellers.
  • Pickup: door to door — hotel or guesthouse, railway station or airport.
  • Cars: sedans for up to 3 travellers, minivans for 6 or 7, a minibus for up to 16; for larger groups, ask us.
  • Main routes: Tashkent ⇄ Samarkand 4–5 hours, Samarkand ⇄ Bukhara 4–5 hours, Bukhara ⇄ Khiva 6–7 hours; every route runs in both directions.
  • Stops: short stops for photos, rest or food on request.
  • Price: per car, not per person; it depends on the car and the route — see our private transfers in Uzbekistan or ask us.

How a car with driver works with a local operator

You send us the route, the date, the number of travellers and the number of suitcases. We reply with the cars that fit and confirm the booking; where the website shows no price for a route, we confirm it for your date by WhatsApp or e-mail. On the day, the driver collects you at the address you gave us and drops you at the address at the other end — a hotel, a guesthouse, a railway station or an airport.

The car is yours for the journey: a photo stop at a viewpoint, a tea break or lunch on the way are part of the service — just tell the driver. Standard luggage is included.

What the driver does — and what a guide does

The driver's job is the road: getting you and your luggage to the next address safely and in comfort, and stopping when you ask. A driver is not a guide. On our tours the guide and the driver are two different people: the guide explains the monuments and the history, the driver looks after the car and the route. If you want someone to walk you through Registan or Ak-Saray, choose a tour that includes a guide rather than a transfer.

Which car for your group

The seat numbers count travellers only; the driver is not included. We never offer a car with fewer seats than your group.

  • Standard sedan (Chevrolet Cobalt or Gentra): up to 3 travellers and 3 suitcases.
  • Premium sedan: up to 3 travellers and 3 suitcases.
  • VIP minivan: up to 6 travellers and 6 suitcases.
  • Lux minivan (Hyundai Staria or Starex): up to 7 travellers and 7 suitcases.
  • Standard minibus: up to 16 travellers and 16 suitcases.

Count suitcases as well as people. A couple with two large cases each fits better in a minivan than in a sedan, and a family of five has a choice of the two minivans.

A road trip: Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara – Khiva

The classic route across Uzbekistan is a little over 1,050 km by road. With a private car you drive it in three legs and spend the nights in the cities:

  • Tashkent → Samarkand: about 324 km, 4–5 hours. See the Tashkent–Samarkand private transfer for the cars on this route.
  • Samarkand → Bukhara: about 277 km, 4–5 hours. Car or train on this leg: see our guide Samarkand to Bukhara by car or train.
  • Bukhara → Khiva: about 456 km, 6–7 hours, the longest leg, through the desert. Our guide to the Bukhara–Khiva desert road explains how to plan the day. A visit to the ancient fortresses of Khorezm is a separate option and not part of the direct transfer.

These driving times are the estimates we give for each transfer; traffic and the stops you ask for make the day shorter or longer. Many travellers end the trip in Khiva and fly out of Urgench International Airport, about 43 km away — we run that airport transfer too.

Combining car and train

You do not have to drive every leg. The Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara, while Khiva has its own, less frequent trains (as of October 2026). Many of our tours mix the two: the fast train on the Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara line, and a car where you want stops or where no train fits your day — the desert road to Khiva is the usual example.

A car also closes the gaps the train leaves. Railway stations are often some distance from the old centres, so a driver can meet you at the station and take you straight to your hotel. Take the car for a leg when you carry a lot of luggage or want to stop on the way; take the train when speed matters more.

Day trips by car from Samarkand

Samarkand is our home base, and many places around it are reached only by road.

  • Langar-Ota and Shakhrisabz: Shakhrisabz, Amir Timur's birthplace, is about 88 km south, over the Takhtakaracha Pass. The Langar-Ota and Shakhrisabz day trip adds the mountain village of Langar and its shrine, with a local guide for the day.
  • Seven Lakes, Tajikistan: Panjakent (Penjikent) is only about 62 km from Samarkand, beyond the Jartepa–Sarazm crossing used on our tours. The Seven Lakes day tour to Tajikistan includes transport, border crossing assistance, a local guide and lunch. Many nationalities can visit Tajikistan visa-free or with an e-visa — check the current rules for your passport on the official e-visa portal before you book.
  • Gilan village: a two-day trip over the same pass and through Shakhrisabz to a high mountain village where farming is still done by hand on steep slopes.

We have no fixed transfer price from Samarkand to Panjakent; for the border trip, book the tour or contact us with your plan.

Practical tips

  • Send the exact pickup address — hotel name and street — and, for stations and airports, your train or flight details.
  • Start long legs, above all Bukhara – Khiva, in the morning so that you arrive in daylight.
  • Keep your passport with you in the car, not in a suitcase; on the Tajikistan trip it is checked at two border posts.
  • Carry some cash in local currency for roadside cafés and small purchases on the way.

Questions and answers

How much does a private driver cost in Uzbekistan?

The price is per car, not per person, and depends on the vehicle and the route. Our transfer pages show the price where it is fixed; for other routes we confirm it for your date by WhatsApp or e-mail.

Is the car shared with other travellers?

No. The car and the driver are for you and your travel companions only, from pickup to drop-off.

Can the driver also be our guide?

No. The driver looks after the car and the road; on our tours a separate local guide explains the sites.

How long is the drive from Tashkent to Khiva?

In three legs — Tashkent to Samarkand, Samarkand to Bukhara and Bukhara to Khiva — it takes about 14 to 17 hours of driving over a little more than 1,050 km. Most travellers spread it over several days with nights in each city.

Which car is right for a family of five?

A minivan: the VIP minivan seats up to 6 travellers with 6 suitcases, the Lux minivan up to 7 with 7 suitcases. A sedan seats only 3.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. Short stops for photos, rest or food are possible on request on every route.
