Day 1The walk: a typical route
- 1. West Gate and Kalta Minor — the short, wide minaret covered in turquoise tiles, begun in the 1850s and never finished.
- 2. Kunya-Ark — the fortress and residence of the khans of Khiva, with its courtyards, summer mosque and throne room.
- 3. Juma Mosque — a great hall held up by more than two hundred carved wooden columns.
- 4. Islam Khoja minaret — Khiva's tallest minaret, built in the early 20th century.
- 5. Pahlavan Mahmud mausoleum — the resting place of Khiva's patron saint, with one of the finest tiled interiors in the town.
- 6. Tash-Hauli palace — the 19th-century palace of Allakuli Khan, with courtyards lined in blue majolica.
- 7. Quiet lanes, the clay walls and craft workshops.
